Opportunity 

Introducing sustainable practices to employee device recovery 

The customer works with Omnissa, a long-term Apkudo partner, to secure and manage its employee-issued mobile devices. The Omnissa team recognized that the customer would benefit from automated device recovery and the ability to sell retired devices on the secondary market. So, Omnissa introduced the customer to Apkudo and its Recover software.

The customer team was very interested in Recover’s device circularity reporting. With data on avoided e-waste, carbon dioxide consumption, and energy and water use, the customer can now quantify the environmental impact of device recovery as a contribution to the broader organization’s ESG goals. In addition, this unprecedented transparency allows the customer to demonstrate its steadfast commitment to sustainability at a time when other companies’ efforts are more about greenwashing than driving real change. 

Thanks to the integration of Recover with Omnissa’s Workspace ONE® unified endpoint management platform, the customer can message employees through the platform when it is time to retire their devices. Rather than getting emails from unfamiliar senders that they might ignore, employees receive messages the same way they receive other communications from IT operations, making them more likely to comply. Higher employee compliance means more opportunities for the customer to recycle, reuse, and resell devices.

Making the most of automation to work smarter

Apkudo has relationships with key customer vendors, including Omnissa for endpoint management, SHI for device provisioning, and Calero for managed mobility services. These relationships helped streamline and accelerate onboarding with a clear path to automate the process from the point of order to device unenrollment. Apkudo connected the customer with a global remarketing partner, which allowed them to consolidate device processing under one supplier for the United States and the United Kingdom.

Apkudo's Recover software offers transparency into environmental impact and peace of mind that devices are safely redeployed or responsibly recycled.

Apkudo began working in April 2024 and quickly understood the customer’s needs. The company has 19,000 mobile devices deployed to employees worldwide. It refreshes these devices every two years to ensure employees have the latest secure technology. 

The Recover platform automates mobile device returns, streamlining the process for IT and making compliance easier for employees, increasing device recovery rates. The new process triggers an email to employees when it is time for a device upgrade. Employees submit their upgrade request with Calero. Five days later, Recover triggers a return request through Omnissa’s Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub notifications, and employees select how they want to return their device. 

A new integration with Workspace ONE allows the customer to easily identify employees who have not yet returned their mobile devices. The customer can tag employee profiles to activate device restrictions as a “nudge” to employees to return their devices promptly.

The customer has a hybrid workforce, and employees often want to return their devices to the IT help desk when they are in the office. So, Apkudo’s team built a new Recover workflow to accommodate this need. This is another way to increase device recovery by “meeting employees where they are,” and it demonstrates Recover’s flexibility to address specific organizational needs.

Sustainability within IT operations has always been a priority for the customer—so much so that the company now has a role responsible for sustainable technology. In addition to focusing on energy efficiency at data centers, IT can infuse sustainable practices into other parts of its operations.

In a short time, the customer has brought meaningful sustainability practices and rich data insight to mobile device returns. Before using the Recover platform, the customer shipped returned mobile devices to the telecom company for recycling. Leaders had limited visibility into sustainability data beyond estimates of avoided e-waste. 

Today, these leaders have full transparency through robust mobile device circularity reporting. Enhanced reporting offers their first-ever granular view of sustainable impact. By working with Apkudo, the customer minimizes its environmental impact through asset recovery.
